Tom Thumb, the stage name of Charles Sherwood Stratton (1838-1883), appears here in his wedding attire with his bride, Lavinia Warren, whose stage name was also Lavinia Warren. Both were performers in P.T. Barnum's traveling entertainments, and their 1863 wedding in New York City became one of the most publicized events of its day. Barnum promoted the ceremony heavily, and crowds gathered for a glimpse of the couple, who were part of a wider fashion for carefully staged celebrity images. Pictures like this one show how popular entertainers used photography to build public interest in their personal lives.
