Pocahontas, daughter of the Powhatan leader, is shown at her 1614 marriage to the English planter John Rolfe. The union is widely linked to a few years of relative peace between the Virginia colonists and the Powhatan people, and the couple's son, Thomas Rolfe, is the reason many of Rolfe's English descendants later traced their lineage to her. Published in Philadelphia around 1867 by Joseph Hoover, the print reflects how 19th-century audiences romanticized the story, since no contemporary likeness of Pocahontas is known to exist. The artist's signature on the stone is difficult to read, but the piece is typical of the sentimental treatments of the subject that circulated during the period.
