Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, stands at the center of this full-length view, wearing a cap and gown in place of his more familiar white suit. The photograph was taken on October 6, 1909, the day his daughter Clara married the Russian-born pianist Ossip Gabrilowitsch, and five other people appear with him. At 73, Clemens was among the best-known writers in the country, and the academic dress recalls the honorary degrees he had received in his later years, including one from Oxford in 1907. Wedding pictures of a figure this famous capture a family occasion that the public rarely saw up close.
