This group portrait records the wedding of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953, in Newport, Rhode Island. Toni Frissell, best known for her fashion and society photography, made the picture. Kennedy had just won a U.S. Senate seat, and Bouvier was a Washington society figure, so the wedding drew attention from both Boston and the capital. The formal arrangement reflects the conventions of a 1950s society wedding, when a group portrait served as the family's lasting record of the day.
