Few Harlem wedding pictures from the 1920s show this much formal care, and James Van DerZee, the neighborhood studio photographer, made this one from his shop on West 135th Street. He built his reputation on carefully composed portraits, and his images of bridal parties record the clothing, the family groupings, and the pride of Black New Yorkers during the Harlem Renaissance. This print was made around 1974, decades after the negative was exposed, as number 2 of 75 editions in an eighteen-photograph portfolio published in Washington, D.C., that year.
