Gladys Vanderbilt, a daughter of one of the country's wealthiest families, married Count László Széchenyi of Hungary in New York City on January 27, 1908, and this print shows guests arriving for the occasion. It comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs that documents events in American life in the early twentieth century. Marriages between American heiresses and European noblemen drew intense newspaper attention in those years, so the wedding was covered widely. The picture is useful for its record of the formal dress and public interest that surrounded such a celebrity event.
