This photograph documents guests heading to the Harriman-Gerry wedding on March 3, 1908, a society event whose name survives on an old caption card that the Library of Congress has not independently verified. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made up of news pictures from the Bain News Service in New York, which sent photographers to cover public events, celebrity appearances and social occasions in the early twentieth century. Pictures like this one, taken as people arrived for a ceremony rather than during it, offer a view of how fashionable weddings were covered by the press in that era.
