Issued by Melander of Chicago and numbered 77, this stereograph is titled simply *The wedding ceremony*, and its caption card gives no date. Stereo cards like this were made from two nearly identical exposures taken from slightly different positions, which a stereoscope fused into one image with apparent depth. Wedding scenes were a popular subject for these cards in the late nineteenth century, when families could revisit familiar rites of passage at home. Scenes of this kind were often arranged with posed participants, so the card reads more as a picture of a ceremonial type than as a record of one documented event.
