Elizabeth Blackwell appears in this oval bust portrait with a wedding veil framing her head, an unusual image for a woman who never married. In 1849 she became the first woman in the United States to earn a medical degree, from Geneva Medical College in New York, and she later helped establish institutions that trained other women doctors. Dating to about 1877, when she was working in England, the photograph was likely a studio portrait in which the veil was a costume rather than a record of a ceremony, though the record does not say so directly.
