The record gives only the name "Museum," but the Berlin building most often pictured under that name in this period is the Altes Museum on the Lustgarten, a neoclassical hall designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and opened in 1830 to display the royal art collections. Photochrom prints like this one came from a Swiss process that combined a black-and-white photograph with several lithographic stones, each printing a different color. The Detroit Publishing Company distributed these views in the United States under its own numbered catalog, and the layered color gives the stone facade a soft, slightly painted look.
