Yvonne Colas, a 15-year-old pupil at a girls' school, signed this 1918 French color lithograph, which was sponsored by the Comité de Prévoyance et d'Économies. Its title, roughly "With rationing we will have little, but we will all have some," asks readers to cut their sugar in half today so there will be some tomorrow. By 1918 France had been at war for four years, and staples were strictly limited, so saving at home was presented as a patriotic duty. The poster's appeal to a schoolgirl's hand shows how wartime economy reached into classrooms as well as households.
