A child's plea, rather than a soldier's, makes this 1915 poster stand out: *Pour que papa vienne en permission, s'il vous plaît* ("So that papa may come home on leave, please"). It is signed by Poulbot, the illustrator best known for his scruffy street children of Montmartre, and the French Red Cross is its subject. Posters like this used the image of a family separated by war to turn private worry into public support for the home front. The two-color lithograph is a reminder of how much of wartime France's morale and fundraising was carried by pictures of children.
