Street children, a policeman, and a quarrel crowd this lithograph, which carries the signature "Poulbot," a name tied to the scrappy Paris urchins that artist drew so often. Its two-color text reads roughly "Tomorrow there will be some tobacco and some cigarettes, so smokers, a little patience, let us restrain ourselves today." That plea reflects the scarcity that gripped France during the First World War, when tobacco and cigarettes were hard to find. Printed in 1917, the poster belongs to a wave of wartime appeals asking civilians to accept small hardships for the war effort.
