Minot's Ledge Light stands on a submerged reef about a mile and a half off Cohasset, on the south shore of Massachusetts Bay, so its plans had to solve problems that no shore tower faced. The first lighthouse on the ledge was swept away by storms while still under construction in the early 1850s, and the replacement was built of granite blocks fitted and bonded to the rock, a far more demanding task than a land-based tower. These elevation and section drawings record that engineering, showing the tower's profile and how its interior was arranged to hold the light above the waves. They are useful for seeing how the designers tried to make a structure survive open-ocean weather.
