Few lights on the New England coast stood in as exposed a spot as Minot's Ledge, a reef in open water off Cohasset that is covered at high tide. This print pairs a view of the tower with cross-sections of other sea rock lighthouses, so viewers can compare how engineers anchored their structures to rock that waves break over constantly. The first Minot's Ledge tower was destroyed in a storm, and that loss shaped the rebuilding that followed. The sections show how much of a light's stability lay below the waterline, out of sight.
