Minot's Ledge, a submerged reef off Cohasset, sat in the approaches to Boston Harbor and wrecked many vessels, which is why a lighthouse was built on it at all. The first tower, an iron-framed structure completed around 1850, was swept away in a violent April 1851 storm, and its two keepers died with it. The disaster made the ledge's exposure painfully clear to mariners and engineers. A replacement, a granite tower built to withstand the Atlantic's full force, was finished in 1860 and still stands. Pictures of the destroyed first light show how fragile the earlier design was in the open sea.
