Stereo cards like this one were a parlor staple in the late 19th century, when viewers pressed a pair of nearly identical photographs into a stereoscope and saw a single three-dimensional scene. This example shows a lighthouse braced against a heavy sea, with waves breaking hard around its base. Its location on the Southeast Massachusetts coast, a region of rocky shoals and exposed headlands, explains why such a station needed to hold firm through rough weather. Because the record gives few specifics, the card is best read as a glimpse of both the maritime hazards of the area and the popular taste for dramatic scenes of the sea.
