A pale ring of light encircles the moon above this dark water, and a lone figure stands in silhouette, giving the scene a quiet, watchful mood. The record does not name the maker or date, but moonlit seascapes were a favorite subject for artists working on Cape Cod from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, when Provincetown and Truro drew painters to the coast's changing light. A lunar halo forms when ice crystals high in the air bend moonlight, and artists often used it to suggest calm or unease.
