A German caption names this picture as a "KWK-Stand," shorthand for a Kampfwagenkanone, or tank gun, set into a fixed defensive position. The photograph is number 11 of 17 in a 1944 caption album covering the Atlantic Wall in Normandy and Brittany. Germany built the Atlantic Wall along occupied France's coast from 1942 onward to repel an Allied landing, and the concrete gun positions in such pictures show how heavily the coast was fortified before the Normandy invasion that June.
