Titled "The ballroom, - the waltz," this stereograph shows a formal dance at a time when the waltz was the centerpiece of evening social life. The card was issued by the H.C. White Co. of North Bennington, Vermont, a publisher of stereoviews, around 1902, when paired photographs like this were popular parlor entertainment. Viewed through a stereoscope, two nearly identical images merged into a single three-dimensional scene, letting viewers at home feel they stood among the dancers. The copyright notation on the card records its registration with the U.S. Copyright Office.
