Inaugural stands in Washington, D.C., in 1917 show the seating built for crowds watching a presidential swearing-in. The date matches Woodrow Wilson's second inauguration on March 5, 1917, about a month before the United States entered the First World War. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded much of the city's public life in those years, made the glass negative, which measures 8 by 6 inches. Streaks and blemishes from the aging of its original coating are visible, a reminder of how fragile these plates could be.
