Taken in June 1917 in Washington, this glass negative captures suffrage activists at a moment when the movement was pressing its demands in the nation's capital. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed the city extensively in the early twentieth century, made the image, and its title, "Suffragettes," came from data the company recorded that the library has not verified. By mid-1917, the National Woman's Party had been picketing the White House for months, a campaign that led to arrests and public debate before the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
