The National Photo Company's title for this glass negative, "Suffragettes," places the scene in Washington, D.C., in 1917, though that label was never verified. The subject fits the moment: that year suffragists were highly visible in the capital, most notably the Silent Sentinels, who began picketing the White House in January. The 4 by 6 inch negative came to the collection as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Its streaks and blemishes come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, which affects how much fine detail can be read.
