Few Washington scenes from 1917 bring the fight for the vote into view as directly as this glass negative. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded the capital for decades, supplied its title, though that label is unverified. In 1917 the National Woman's Party was holding daily silent pickets outside the White House, making Washington the center of the push for a federal suffrage amendment. Streaks and blemishes from the natural decay of the original coating now mark the 4-by-6-inch plate, adding a worn texture to the record.
