Few details survive about this 4 by 6 inch glass negative beyond its title, "Suffragettes," and its 1917 date, so the scene has to be read against its moment. That year, women campaigning for the vote were a visible presence in the nation's capital, and the National Woman's Party's silent pickets outside the White House drew wide press attention before the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in 1920. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented Washington street life and public events in the early twentieth century, made the negative. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
