The inauguration of Woodrow Wilson to a second term in March 1917 was the event this glass negative is said to show, though the title comes from data written by the National Photo Company and has not been independently verified. Wilson took the oath on March 5, 1917, weeks before the United States entered World War I in April, so the ceremony took place as the country was moving toward war. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active from about 1900 to 1932, documented the city's public life, and its negatives are a useful record of the capital in those years. Some streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the deterioration of its original coating.
