The caption sets this game apart, pitting a team called the Perfections against a squad labeled "5CAL" under a training-camp reference. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that photographed news, government and everyday subjects from about 1910 into the 1930s, made the print. Baseball was a popular off-duty pastime at army posts and training camps in the years around the First World War, when organized games helped soldiers stay active and build unit pride. Photographs like this one capture that informal side of military life, which official records rarely show.
