This panoramic group portrait is unusual for its width: at nearly four feet long, it fits the whole Brooklyn Federal League club into one frame, with the players and staff named on the image itself. The Federal League was an upstart third major league that played in 1914 and 1915 in direct competition with the National and American Leagues, and its Brooklyn club, known that season as the Tip-Tops, was one of its more prominent franchises. The print was registered for copyright in April 1914, and the photographer's Pittsburgh address on the record suggests a commercial studio working on team commissions. Sitters, uniforms, and the posed arrangement all offer a close look at how a short-lived rival league presented itself to the public.
