Pittsburg, spelled that way here, was the city's official name until 1911, so this group portrait of the National League club carries the older form in its title. The team had joined the league in 1887 and was among its established clubs when the picture was taken. George F. Bain, a photographer working in Allegheny, a separate city until 1907, registered the image for copyright on May 16, 1896, and his studio's team portraits circulated widely in that period.
