Here President William Howard Taft appears with his party at a ball game in Washington, D.C., a setting that suits his well-known fondness for baseball. Taft followed the Washington Senators closely, and in April 1910 he became the first sitting president to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day. The photograph was made by B.M. Clinedinst, a Washington photographer whose studio work included portraits of prominent officials, and it offers a relaxed, social view of presidential life in the Taft years.
