Unlike the standard player portrait, this item presents the whole Washington Base Ball Club as a single cigarette card, a format that suggests how eagerly 1880s tobacco makers used baseball to sell their products. Goodwin & Co. of New York printed it as an advertisement for Old Judge cigarettes and registered the copyright in 1887. Cards like this were tucked into cigarette packs, and collectors saved them, which is why so many of these images survive today. The card offers a useful look at how a city's team was presented to the public during the years when professional baseball was becoming a major national pastime.
