The caption makes a grim joke of a navy tragedy: the team is "all blown up at Havana except no. 1 J.H. Bloomer." The battleship *Maine* exploded and sank in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898, killing more than 250 of her crew, and the disaster helped push the United States toward war with Spain that spring. Mages & Co., a Chicago studio, registered the picture for copyright on May 2, 1898, while the country was still stirred up over the sinking. Such novelty group portraits, which pair sports teams with current events, show how quickly ordinary people turned headline news into popular entertainment.
