Few women's teams of the early twentieth century carried a name as pointed as the Boston Bloomer Girls, and this photograph's record credits L.J. Galbreath as both the club's originator and its owner. The "bloomer" in the name recalls the loose, knee-length trousers that Amelia Bloomer promoted in the 1850s, a garment that became a symbol of women's rights and physical freedom. From the 1890s into the 1910s, bloomer girl teams toured the country, playing exhibition games against men's local clubs and drawing crowds with the novelty of women on the diamond. The photograph dates from the same decades, when women's baseball was popular as entertainment even as it was often dismissed as a sideshow.
