The Boston Base Ball Club of 1888 was one of the strongest teams of the National League's early years, and the two-word spelling "Base Ball" reflects how the sport was still commonly written before the single word became standard. The club, later known as the Beaneaters and eventually the Braves, won the pennant that season, a reminder of how dominant the franchise was in the 1880s. Team portraits from this era were often posed in studio settings, with players arranged in formal rows, so the image also shows how baseball was presented to fans as a respectable civic pastime.
