The "first nine" name refers to a club's starting lineup, and this portrait shows the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, widely regarded as the first openly professional baseball team. Under manager Harry Wright, the club paid its players and went undefeated that season, which drew national attention and helped push the sport toward professionalism. The team's red stockings gave it the nickname still associated with Cincinnati baseball.
