The 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first openly all-professional baseball team, and this image preserves the lineup that made them famous. The club paid its players salaries at a time when most teams still used amateur or semi-pro men, and that decision set the Red Stockings apart. The team went undefeated through the 1869 season, finishing 57-0, and its tour across the country drew large crowds who came to see the new professional game. Nine men in matching uniforms posed for the camera, giving later fans a rare look at the players who started professional baseball.
