Few early team portraits carry a sponsor's name as openly as this one, with the Havana Tobacco advertisement printed alongside the players. The title points to the original Red Stockings of Cincinnati, the 1869 club that paid its players openly and went the entire season without a loss, and the nickname outlived that team when Boston adopted red stockings as well. Tobacco and cigar makers in the late 1800s often put their brands on baseball cards and lithographs, since fans followed the game and smoked, so this layout reflects how the sport was being sold.
