Currier & Ives published this lithograph in 1866, when baseball was still mostly played by amateur clubs in and around New York. The title's claim to be the "American National Game" reflected a growing sense that baseball was distinctly home-grown, even as it was borrowing from older bat-and-ball games. Cheap color lithographs like this one reached a broad market, so the print also shows how ordinary Americans pictured the sport in the years after the Civil War.
