The Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey, were the site of what is widely regarded as the first organized baseball game played under the Knickerbocker rules, in June 1846, when the New York Knickerbockers lost to the New York Base Ball Club 23 to 1. That early match made the riverside grounds a landmark in the game's history, and this lithograph presents the scene as a national pastime already drawing crowds of spectators. Prints like this one were popular in the 1860s and 1870s, when baseball was growing rapidly in popularity and publishers marketed the sport to a wide audience.
