This print is a Base Ball game scene issued by L. Prang & Co., the Boston firm founded by German-born printer Louis Prang. Its "aquarelle" label refers to a chromolithograph built from many color stones to mimic the soft washes of watercolor, a process Prang's shop used to make affordable pictures for the home. Baseball was still developing its rules and reputation in the decades when such prints appeared, so the image offers a glimpse of how the sport was pictured to a wide public. Look closely at the figures and the field to see how the artists set the game in its period.
