Louis Prang & Co., a Boston firm famous for chromolithographs, produced this 1887 aquarelle print of baseball, a subject that was still finding its place in American popular imagery. Prang's shop turned out color prints of sports, seasonal scenes and patriotic themes for a wide middle-class market, and its work was known for imitating watercolor, the "aquarelle" effect named on the title. Baseball prints from this period often show players in action and crowds on the field, offering a snapshot of how the game was pictured when it was still the national pastime in the making. Look closely at the layered color and soft washes, which show how much hand-finishing went into these multi-stone lithographs.
