The color lithograph titled "The Base Ball Collar" ties a men's clothing product to the sport's growing popularity. Its label advertises a linen-imitation collar with a lined buttonhole and was entered for copyright in 1869 by Stiefel & Co. in New York. By the late 1860s, baseball clubs were spreading across the Northeast and Midwest, and manufacturers borrowed the game's appeal to sell everyday goods. Detachable collars were a standard part of men's dress then, so this small printed piece shows commerce and sport meeting in an ordinary wardrobe item.
