Among the many advertisements of the late 1860s, this color lithograph stands out for tying a men's shirt accessory to a sport. Its label reads "Linen imitation" and notes a lined buttonhole, and the print was entered for copyright in 1869 by Stiefel & Co. in New York. Baseball was gaining a devoted following in those years, and manufacturers borrowed that popularity to sell everyday clothing. The print offers a glimpse of how commercial culture reflected the game's rise just as professional play was taking shape.
