The title promises a wide-angle survey of the game, and the date given for this print is October 25, 1859, though that date and the name associated with it, Wm. T. Crane, come from a shelflist card and have not been verified. Multi-scene views like this were popular as baseball was taking shape in the New York area. In the late 1850s the game was still organizing itself around the Knickerbocker rules and local club play, several years before the Civil War spread it among soldiers in camps. Prints of this kind offer a glimpse of how much public attention the sport was already drawing before it became a national pastime.
