This color lithograph by L. Prang & Co. uses the firm's "aquarelle" technique, which built up many stone impressions to imitate the soft washes of a painted sketch. Prang was a Boston printer known for chromolithographs sold to a broad middle-class market, and its work from the 1880s shows how commercial color printing had become. Baseball was expanding quickly across the United States in those years, with professional leagues and local clubs drawing large crowds, so the print reflects a sport that had become a popular subject for mass-produced art.
