Few baseball images of the 1890s carry as clear a maker's trail as this chromolithograph, numbered 282 and registered for copyright in 1895 by the Calvert Lithographing Company of Detroit. Half-sheet posters like this were pasted on storefronts, fences and billboards, so they reached fans in towns far from the major-league parks. Chromolithography built up color by printing a separate stone or plate for each hue, which let the company turn ballplayers into bright, eye-catching advertising. Prints like this one show how the new professional game was promoted to the public during the decade.
