The gorge at El Cantara, an oasis town in eastern Algeria where the Aurès mountains meet the edge of the Sahara, is the subject of this view. A river has cut deep into the rock there, and the pass became a stopping point on the route between the coast and the desert. The print is a photochrom, a Swiss process that layered hand-prepared color stones over a photographic image, and the Detroit Photographic Company used it to sell travel scenes to American buyers around 1899. Look at the sheer rock walls and the soft, saturated color bands, which show how the process rendered stone and vegetation.
