The river mouth in this view was known to early British settlers as Buffalo Harbor, a name that predates the town's later title of East London. The harbor sits where the Buffalo River meets the Indian Ocean, and its shifting sandbar made entry difficult for ships, which shaped how the port grew. Benjamin S. Agnew's 1898 photoprint, numbered 26, shows the waterfront at the close of the nineteenth century, when the port handled wool and goods from the surrounding Eastern Cape. The caption card is unverified, so its details should be read with that in mind.
