Workers unloading wheat from a steamship at Buffalo, New York, show the city's dockside grain trade at work. Buffalo grew into one of the largest grain-handling ports on the Great Lakes after the Erie Canal opened in 1825, linking the lakes to New York markets and making the city a transfer point between lake vessels and rail and canal boats. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that produced large numbers of views of American places around 1900 to 1920, made this print. The record's date is taken from an old caption card and has not been verified.
