Few posters of the period turned a political catastrophe into summer entertainment, yet this one does. Its title refers to the Paris Commune, the revolutionary government that held the French capital for about ten weeks in 1871 before the national army retook it in a week of street fighting. The lithograph advertises a fireworks spectacle devised by Pain of London and presented at Manhattan Beach, the Brooklyn seaside resort, with music by Gilmore's Band under Patrick Gilmore. The record's subject terms, which include fireworks, bridges, and the Commune's campaigns, suggest the show used Paris's bridges over the Seine as pyrotechnic scenery for the battle.
